Ajax Cape Town has won the ninth edition of the Aegon Copa Amsterdam. The South Africans were better after a penalty shootout against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Since it was constantly raining, the conditions got really difficult for both teams. Although the Germans might be more used to this weather, the South Africans were the first ones being able to adapt to the rain. The team from South Africa scored the 1-0 after a stunning crosspass, putting three strikers against one defender. They didn’t fail in putting the ball at the back of the net.

In the second half, the condition of the pitch went from bad to worse, which frustrated the players of Borussia Mönchengladbach. Though, they scored the equalizer by the foot of Nickels. In extra time, both teams managed to score a goal, which ment there was no other option but exposing both teams to the ultimate test: a penalty shootout.

After seven penaltys one of the teams had to crack, and it was Borussia Mönchengladbach who missed the 7th. Since Ajax Cape Town managed to score theirs, they won the tournament.

Van Kessel scored the 1-0 from a penalty. After their first goal, the Amsterdammers dictated the match, resulting in a quick second goal. In the second half, Ajax managed to double the score. German test player Höner scored the third goal, followed by Van Kessel for the final goal. Especially the last goal was a beauty, maneuvering in between four defenders and slowly placing the ball in the back of the net.

In Group A, AFC Ajax and Ajax Cape Town shared the points in their second game after a 0-0 draw. Both sides had a fair share of possession but finding the ball behind the back of the net was a problem. AFC Ajax has thus amassed their first point in this edition of the Aegon Copa Amsterdam.

In the 1st half AFC Ajax showed that they wanted to win this game. Ajax could have taken the lead in the seventh minute when Queensy Menig had a one-on- one chance but failed to beat Ajax Capetown’s goalkeeper. The pacy winger decided to cross the ball instead of hitting it. Nick de Bondt had to connect the ball at the second post but the cross was hit too hard.

Ajax had another chance before half time to make it 1-0. The German trialist Marvin Höner received an inch perfect cross from Queensy Menig but the striker could not find the ball at the back of the net after coming one–on-one with the South African goalkeeper. The striker thought he had scored the game’s first goal but to everyone’s surprise it was not a goal.

In the second half, a miracle was the difference between AFC Ajax and Ajax Cape Town. Höner had another scoring opportunity but the goalkeeper stopped it. Cape Town had a lot of space on the right flank which the winger took advantage of, but his attempt hit the crossbar.

Minutes before the end of the game, Ajax tried to win the game with their last attack. Queensy Menig and Marvin Höner almost orchestrated that victory but their best was not enough. Ajax has recorded their first draw of the tournament and thus has one point after two games. Ajax’ progress in the tournament is now dependent on their last game and results in the other game of Group A.

Men United have lost their second Copa Amsterdam game as they were thrashed 4-0 by Brazil’s Cruzeiro. The defending champions were too strong for Ronald de Boer’s side.

The game begun as was expected with Cruzeiro having most of the better chances but the Brazilians could not convert their chances into goals. Men United played a determined game and showed glimpses of brilliance but Cruzeiro was beter .Men United had very few chances and the game had still not seen any special moment.
The moment of the first half came from another team: Ajax Cape Town. The South Africans sang and danced during their warm up. Coincidentally, Cruizero got their first goal in the first half. Rodrigo Dias got Cruzeiro’s first goal of the game. 1-0

The second half begun just as the second half, Cruzeiro had the most possession and Men United had very few playing opportunities. The 2-0 was not far away as Juninho got the 2-0 for the Brazilians. The goals started flowing after Os Celestes second goal. Emerson Oliveira got the 3-0 in the 43rd minute and two minutes later Santos got the 4th.

Score:
20‘ Rodrigo Dias (1-0)
39‘ Juninho (2-0)
43’ Oliveira (3-0)
45’ Santos (4-0)

AMSTERDAM – Ronald de Boer’s side played their first game against Brazil’s Fluminense. There was not so much action in the first minutes of the game as both sides were still getting used to the pace of the game.

The Brazilians dominated most parts of the game especially the initial parts of the game. Men United kept it tight for a while before de Boer’s side conceded a goal in the 9th minute. Lucas Henrique got Fluminense’s first goal of the game. Men United tried their best to get back into the game after that early goal. They kept pressing and wanted to prove a point. De Boer’s side became more aggressive what showed that they had not given up.

In the second half, an eager Men United side came back from recess a different side but Fluminense’s goalkeeper was still not tested. The Brazilians were everywhere on the pitch and kept possession during most parts of the game, as their opponents kept losing the ball to them.

Ten minutes to the end of the game, Fluminense extended their lead as they scored a second, 2-0. Gustavo Scarpa beat his opponent beautifully and placed the ball perfectly. A minute later, they could have extended their lead to 3-0, but Men United goalkeeper made a fantastic save. Men United almost scored a consolation goal towards the end of the game as Belarbi’s attempt went inches wide. Fluminense did not create so many chances after their second goal and looked less threatening and thus won the game 0-2.

Men United – Fluminense 0-2
’9 Lucas Henrique
’40 Gustavo Scarpa
